Is There a Bear in the Room? Understanding Anxiety and Your Internal Alarm
Imagine you’re walking through a forest and suddenly… there’s a bear!
Your body doesn’t stop to have a little chat about it. It goes straight into HIGH ALERT.
Heart racing. Muscles tense. Breathing changes. Your mind starts scanning for danger.
All very useful when there really is a bear.
The problem is, our brains can sometimes react to everyday life as though there is one.
A difficult conversation. An unanswered WhatsApp. Going to work. A change in plans. Worrying about your health. A thought that pops into your head at 2am…
No actual bear required. 🐻
Your nervous system is simply trying to protect you. It’s constantly asking, “Am I safe?” And sometimes that internal alarm becomes a little too sensitive — going off when there’s no immediate danger.
That can leave you feeling constantly on edge, overthinking everything, expecting something to go wrong or finding it difficult to properly relax.
So what can we do about it?
The aim isn’t to get rid of anxiety completely. Anxiety is there for a reason. Instead, we can start to understand what sets your alarm off, what keeps it going and what helps you feel safer and more in control.
In our counselling sessions, we can gently explore what’s happening underneath the anxiety, notice your patterns and find ways to turn the volume down on that internal alarm.
Because sometimes you don’t need to fight the bear.
You just need to stop your brain from thinking there’s one hiding behind every bush. 🐻
If anxiety is making life feel heavier, I’d be happy to help you make sense of what’s going on — in a warm, relaxed and completely non-judgemental space.
You don’t have to figure it all out on your own.
