What is trauma, and how does it show up?

Trauma counselling Epping — gentle person-centred support with BACP registered counsellor Lynda Dorbin

Trauma is not just about what happened — it’s about how your nervous system responded, and how it continues to respond long after the event. Trauma can show up as:

  • Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts
  • Feeling constantly on edge or easily startled
  • Emotional numbness or disconnection from yourself
  • Avoiding reminders of what happened
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
  • Low self-worth or a belief that something is fundamentally wrong with you
  • Unexplained physical symptoms — tension, fatigue, chronic pain

How I work with trauma

I use a gentle, person-centred approach to trauma — which means I follow your lead entirely. There is no pressure to revisit painful memories, and no timeline you need to follow. My priority is that you feel safe in our sessions first and foremost.

Over time, as trust builds, many clients find they’re able to begin to process difficult experiences in a manageable way. You can learn more about how sessions work or see fees and availability. The Mind website has further information about trauma and its effects.
